Rawls, at least the Rawls of A Theory of Justice, offers a model of political theory as an engineer’s blueprint. He shows how something can be built from scratch,… By contrast, Walzer offers a model of political theory as an impressionist painting of our moral landscape… To see a landscape through a painting is not the same as to view it with the naked eye. The artist offers a reconstructive interpretation, drawing attention to colours, shadings, interconnections. Once we’ve seen the artist’s painting, the landscape actually looks different to us, though in important ways what the artist sees was always already there.
